Two Main Benefits of Having a Dehumidifier During the Charleston Summer Heat

Tame your heating and air conditioning troubles with humidity control.

Heating and air conditioning get a real workout during the summer months, but especially in July. It’s our warmest month of the year! You can use humidity control features to stay cool while reducing stress on your AC unit.

Dehumidifiers provide the following advantages when combined with central air:

1. Reduce your risk of mildew, mold, and pests.

On a hot and humid day, the average Charleston attic is overwhelming. In spaces allowed to retain air moisture, you can feel like you're drowning. It's common for ductwork and plumbing to run through these spaces, as well as hot gaps between walls and floors. As cold water runs through pipes, it cools the air around those pipes, lowering its ability to hold water molecules. Condensation collects on the pipes and drips onto the floor, walls and insulation.

This errant moisture can quickly lead to mold and mildew problems. It can also be a beacon for pests. Water is life, after all. Using a dehumidifier in humid spaces can prevent condensation and all the problems it causes.

2. Feel more comfortable at higher temperatures.

Do you know the science behind humidity and body heat? Humans naturally cool themselves through sweat. But when the air's water content is already high, sweating is more difficult. This is why you can walk from the sweltering outdoors to inside a cooled space and wind up drenched. It's also the reason you will feel hotter outside on a humid day than on a drier day at the same temperature.

Once you lower the moisture content of your home or business’s air, it’s easier for people to sweat and lower their body temperature. Using a dehumidifier in combination with your HVAC can keep you comfortable all summer for less.

A dehumidifier will maximize the impact of your heating and air conditioning equipment. Call Smoak’s Comfort Control to select the best model for your home.
