Summer Energy Saving Tips

Before the dog days of summer arrive, it's a good idea to choose one of several maintenance agreements for your air conditioner. Having a maintenance agreement is just one tip for saving money this summer. Other summer energy saving methods include:

Tip #1: Stop Using Incandescent Light Bulbs

Incandescent light bulbs aren't easy to find these days, but many homes still use them. Using them as little as possible can help save energy in the summer for two big reasons. First, they are very energy inefficient compared to CCFL or LED light bulbs. Second, they produce a lot of heat, which can make your home warmer.

Tip #2: Cover Windows

Whether they're blinds, curtains or drapes, keeping bright sunlight from entering your home can help keep the inside cool. This means you require less work from your air conditioner to keep things comfortable.

Tip #3: Use Fans

A breeze inside your home can make it feel noticeably cooler without setting your thermostat to a lower temperature. It can also help distribute the cooler air from your air conditioner throughout your home.

Tip #4: Avoid Using Your Oven

There's a reason baking is more commonly done during the wintertime. If possible, avoid using the oven and try an alternative method of cooking, such as the microwave, crock pot or outdoor grill.

Tip #5: Make Sure Your HVAC Air Filter Is Clean

The dirtier your HVAC air filter is, the harder your air conditioner has to work to move the same amount of air. Cleaning or replacing the filter takes only a moment and results in less energy wasted.

Tip #6: Make Sure Your Air Conditioner Has Enough Refrigerant

Without enough refrigerant, your air conditioner won't be very effective. As a result, it will run longer than normal. And if your refrigerant level is too low, your air conditioner will do nothing but move the warm air.

Some of these tips are part of a regular maintenance agreement. To learn more about how maintenance agreements can save you money this summer, contact our team of experts at Smoak's Comfort Control online today.

Great tip about how incandescent light bulbs are highly inefficient. I need to get a light bulb set for the kitchen. All of our bulbs exploded when they shorted out.
