3 Plumbing Tips for Your Home Renovation

If your home renovation involves plumbing work, you might have some fears or worries. To help alleviate your concerns, here are a few things to keep in mind before you begin your next home improvement project:

1. Address Other Plumbing Issues

Even before starting your home renovation project, you may have existing plumbing issues or problems. Perhaps you don't know about them. Or maybe you do, but never got around to taking care of them. Now that you'll take on a home improvement project that involves a plumber, why not have that plumber take a look at those problems you never got around to earlier? The plumber probably won't charge anything for the brief consultation and if they do, the charge will be far less since they are already at your home for the home renovation project.

2. Identify Where Your Plumbing Pipes Are

You might have a dream setup for your kitchen or bathroom, but you can't put a sink or shower just anywhere. Actually, you probably can, but you might need to spend a lot more money than you can afford. This is because certain locations in the home or a particular room will have plumbing already installed.

Therefore, if you want to put a shower next to an existing hot and cold water line, it should be a fairly straightforward project. But if you want to put a shower in a corner where there is no water line, you can expect to spend more time and money on the project. It might even be a lot more time or money if there is no room in the flooring or walls to place additional piping.

3. Do Your Plumbing Research before the Renovation Begins

This should be a no-brainer, but not enough homeowners research all possibilities before the renovation project begins. Surprises come up and budgets are often too low. Having alternative plans and options can save a lot of time and aggravation in any home renovation project.

Thanks for the plumbing tips for a home renovation. I appreciate that you mentioned that it's smart to do your plumbing research before the renovations begin. My husband and I are thinking about renovating out the bathroom and I think might be smart to have a plumber over to inspect everything and let us know what we should change when we do that.

Great tip about checking where the pipes hook up to the waterline. My wife noticed that there are 2 leaks in the bathroom and no drain. I'll have to have a drain installed and the pipes patched up.

You make a great point about how you may need to replace the piping in the walls. I need to get a plumber for my sink pipes. My pipes are leaking all over the floor.

Great tips! The thrill of a home renovation can quickly be diminished by unforeseen circumstances, stretched budgets, and other unexpected issues. The good news is that most of the time these problems can be mitigated, if not avoided entirely, by keeping an eye out for warning signals.
