    Using a programmable thermostat is a relatively quick and easy way to increase the performance of your home's heating and air conditioning system. Not only will it help your home feel cooler, but it will help you save money, too.

    How the Programmable Thermostat Works During Summer

    A typical thermostat works by allowing you to set the desired indoor temperature. The air conditioning system will maintain that temperature by turning itself on when the indoor temperature rises above the set temperature. To adjust this set temperature, you must manually adjust the thermostat.


    With a programmable thermostat, you can set the thermostat to demand a certain temperature at a certain time. So during the weekday, when the house is usually empty, the thermostat can be set to a higher temperature, but will automatically lower itself to a cooler temperature right before you return home. Without the programmable feature, you return to an uncomfortably warm home, lower the temperature on the thermostat, and wait until air conditioner drops the indoor temperature to a comfortable level.

    Benefits of a Programmable Thermostat

    According to energy.gov, you can save about 10% on your heating and cooling costs by adjusting the thermostat 7-8 degrees from its normal setting for eight hours each day. If you usually set the thermostat to 74 degrees during the day, setting it to 82 degrees during the summer or 66 degrees in the winter can save up to 10% on heating and cooling costs. In other words, the closer the thermostat temperature is to the outside temperature, the lower the cost to run your HVAC system.
