The refrigerant in your cooling system is the element that makes it possible for your cooling system to transfer warm air to the exterior of your home and cooled air to your living spaces. Run low on refrigerant and your system will be less efficient and may even stop cooling your rooms all together.

Signs that your cooling system needs refrigerant

Since the refrigerant is contained inside the cooling system, it's not always obvious when you are running low and need to call your HVAC technician. However, there are ways to tell that you'll need more refrigerant soon if you know where to look.

    1. The fan is running, but the house isn't getting cool. The classic sign that you need more refrigerant is when your system seems to be running smoothly, but your house isn't getting or staying cool.
    2. Your electric bill goes up for no apparent reason. Another sign that you're running low on refrigerant is a spike in your electric bill. This is because your system has to run more often to keep your rooms cool.
    3. There's ice on the compressor coils. If you see ice forming on your outside compressor, this can also be a sign that you need more refrigerant. A system that's low on coolant can cause the coils to get too cold, which can damage your compressor.
